Victor Moscoso may be best known for his psychedelic posters of the 1960s, but his influence extended beyond the world of rock and roll. In fact, one of Moscoso's most notable contributions was his work in theater.

Moscoso was born in Spain in 1936, but grew up in Galicia and later moved to California with his family when he was a teenager. After studying art at San Francisco State University and the California College of Arts and Crafts, he became involved in the city's counterculture movement and began creating posters for local music venues.

But it was his collaboration with the San Francisco Mime Troupe that brought Moscoso into the world of theater. The Mime Troupe was a politically-oriented theater group that used humor and satire in its performances to critique societal issues. Moscoso's bold, colorful designs were a perfect fit for the group's vibrant, energetic shows.

Moscoso's first poster for the Mime Troupe was for their 1967 production of "The Minstrel Show, or Civil Rights in a Cracker Barrel." The poster features a racially-diverse group of people dancing together against a background of vibrant oranges and purples. It was a striking image that perfectly captured the spirit of the show.

Moscoso went on to create dozens of posters for the Mime Troupe over the years, each one a unique expression of the themes and messages of the show. His work was groundbreaking in its use of color and form, and helped establish the look of the Bay Area counterculture scene.

In addition to his work with the Mime Troupe, Moscoso also created posters for other theater groups and productions. One of his most famous designs was for the 1976 Broadway revival of "Hair," which featured an illustrated figure with wild hair emerging from a psychedelic landscape.

Today, Moscoso's work continues to inspire and influence the world of theater design. His bold use of color, innovative typography, and daring compositions have become iconic symbols of the 1960s counterculture movement, and his legacy lives on through the countless artists he inspired.
