Vin Scully is a legendary figure in the world of sports broadcasting. He spent 67 years as the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, calling some of the most memorable moments in baseball history. But what many people don't know about Scully is that he also had a deep love for the theater.

In fact, Scully was once a theater major at Fordham University in the Bronx, New York. He studied under Father Thomas Duffy, who would later become the university's president. It was Duffy who inspired Scully to pursue a career in broadcasting after he saw him perform in a play.

Scully continued to be involved in theater throughout his life. He was a regular attendee of Broadway shows and often spoke about his admiration for actors and their craft. In 2013, he even made a surprise appearance at one of the biggest nights on the theater calendar, the Tony Awards.

But it wasn't just his appreciation for theater that set Scully apart. He also brought a theatrical flair to his sports broadcasting. His poetic descriptions of the game and its players were almost Shakespearean in their elegance and grace. He had an uncanny ability to capture the drama and tension of a moment with just the right turn of phrase.

Perhaps his most famous call came during Game 6 of the 1986 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets. With the Red Sox just one out away from winning the championship, the Mets staged an improbable comeback. As the game-winner sailed over the fence, Scully delivered his now-iconic line: "If the Mets come back to win this game, they will have stunned everyone in baseball. They'll have stunned me, they'll have stunned you, they'll have stunned everyone!"

It's hard to imagine anyone else delivering that line with such gravitas and dramatic effect. But then again, Scully was a master of his craft, whether he was calling a baseball game or admiring the artistry of the theater.

Vin Scully retired from broadcasting in 2016, leaving behind a legacy that will be hard to match. But his love for theater and his ability to infuse his broadcasts with a touch of theatrical flair will continue to inspire generations of broadcasters to come. As Scully himself once said, "Good things take time, as they should. We shouldn't expect good things to happen overnight. Actually, getting something too easily or too soon can cheapen the outcome."
