Mayer had a long history of involvement in sports, having owned minor league baseball teams in the past. He saw an opportunity to bring a professional football team to Virginia Beach and jumped at the chance when the UFL approached him about owning a franchise.
The Virginia Destroyers quickly became one of the flagship franchises in the UFL, as they featured a roster full of former NFL players including quarterback Chris Greisen, running back Dominic Rhodes, and wide receiver Aundrae Allison. The team also had a standout defense led by defensive end Aaron Kampman and linebacker Jermaine Cunningham.
In their inaugural season, the Virginia Destroyers finished with a record of 3-1 in the regular season and went on to win the UFL Championship by defeating the Las Vegas Locomotives 17-3. The championship game was played in Virginia Beach, and the team's victory was a highlight for the city and its fans.
The following season, the Destroyers had high expectations coming off their championship win but struggled during the regular season, finishing with a record of 1-3. However, they managed to make it to the championship game once again, where they faced the Locomotives for a rematch. Unfortunately, the Destroyers came up short this time, losing by a score of 20-17.
Despite the team's success on the field, the UFL struggled financially and eventually folded after the 2012 season. This meant that the Virginia Destroyers were no longer able to play, leaving many fans disappointed and wondering what could have been if the league had succeeded.
