Washington State Basketball History
The Washington State Cougars basketball program began in 1901, making it one of the oldest programs in the country. The team saw its first success in the 1940s and 1950s under head coach Jack Friel. During Friel's tenure, the Cougars made five NCAA tournament appearances and won two Pac-10 conference championships. Despite the initial success, the program struggled to maintain consistent high-level performance over the next several decades.
In recent years, the Cougars have struggled to find success in the highly competitive Pac-12. Their last NCAA tournament appearance came in 2008, where they lost in the first round to Winthrop. Fourteen years later, in 2021 under first-year head coach Kyle Smith, the team achieved a winning record of 14-13 – the first time the Cougars exceeded a .500 record in league play since the 2010-11 season.
Famous Washington State Basketball Alumni
Washington State has had its fair share of successful alumni in the world of basketball. One of the most notable is Klay Thompson, who currently plays for the Golden State Warriors. Thompson was a standout player during his time at Washington State, earning Pac-10 Player of the Year honors in 2011 before being drafted by the Warriors in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft.
Other former Cougar basketball players include Steve Puidokas, a center who played for the Cougars in the late 1970s and went on to play in the NBA; Craig Ehlo, who played for WSU from 1980 to 1983 before a lengthy NBA career with multiple teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he famously guarded Michael Jordan during "The Shot" in the 1989 playoffs; and Derrick Low, who played for Washington State from 2004-08 and helped lead the team to the Sweet Sixteen in the 2008 NCAA tournament.

Under new head coach Kyle Smith, the Cougars look to be heading in the right direction. Smith took over the program in 2019 after successful stints at San Francisco and Columbia University. He has quickly turned around the program and put the Cougars in positions to compete against some of the best teams in the country.
Most recently, Smith's Cougars were able to upset NCAA tournament-bound Colorado by beating them twice in the regular season.
