Wayne Gretzky, known as "The Great One" in hockey circles, may not immediately come to mind when thinking about theater. However, there have been several instances where the legendary athlete has intersected with the world of stage productions.

One of the most notable examples is the 1988 Broadway musical "Rockabye Hamlet," which featured Gretzky in a cameo role. The show was an updated version of Shakespeare's "Hamlet," set in a rock n' roll universe and starring Canadian actor Terrence Mann as the titular prince. Gretzky appeared in one scene as a laundry worker who sings a song called "I'm Just Your Washerwoman." Although his appearance in the show was brief, it caused a stir among hockey fans who were surprised to see their hero onstage.

Another interesting connection between Gretzky and theater comes from his time as co-owner of the Phoenix Coyotes NHL team. In 2009, the team partnered with the Arizona Theatre Company to host a benefit performance of the play "Take Me Out." The show, which deals with themes of homophobia and inclusivity in the world of professional baseball, was well-received by audiences and raised money for both the Coyotes Charities and the theatre company.

Gretzky has also been involved in charity events for various theater organizations over the years. In 2013, he participated in a celebrity reading of the classic play "Our Town" at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, California. The event was a fundraiser for the Geffen Playhouse, a prestigious theatre company in Los Angeles. Gretzky read the part of Mr. Webb in the play, alongside other celebrities such as Martin Sheen and Steve Carell.

While Wayne Gretzky may be best known for his accomplishments on the ice, his occasional forays into the world of theater show that he has an appreciation for the arts as well. Whether he's singing a song or supporting a good cause, "The Great One" continues to surprise and entertain audiences both on and off the rink.
