Wayne State University is a public research institution located in Detroit, Michigan. The school has a proud athletic tradition, with 14 varsity sports teams competing at the NCAA Division II level. Among these programs is the men's basketball team, known as the Wayne State Warriors.

The Warriors have been a consistent presence in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) since joining the conference in 1975. While the program has faced its fair share of ups and downs over the years, there have been many notable achievements along the way.

One of the highlights of the Warriors' history came in the 2011-12 season, when they won the GLIAC championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in over a decade. Led by standout guard Mike Hollingsworth, Wayne State upset several higher-seeded teams to reach the regional final before falling just short of the Elite Eight.

While the 2011-12 season was undoubtedly a special one, it was far from a fluke. Under head coach David Greer, who took over the program in 2008, the Warriors have consistently been a competitive force in the GLIAC. Greer, a former assistant at Division I programs such as Wright State and Bowling Green, has instilled a culture of hard work and attention to detail that has paid off both on and off the court.

In recent years, Wayne State has produced a number of talented players who have gone on to professional careers overseas. One of the most successful of these is center Ike Udanoh, who played for the Warriors from 2010-14 and went on to play in leagues in Europe and Asia. Udanoh was named to the All-GLIAC First Team twice during his Wayne State career and finished as the program's all-time leader in blocked shots.

As with any college basketball program, Wayne State faces its fair share of challenges. The school is located in a highly competitive recruiting area, with several Division I programs (not to mention professional sports teams) vying for talented young athletes. Additionally, the program has struggled with consistency at times, with several up-and-down seasons in recent years.

Still, there is reason for optimism among Wayne State fans. The program has a solid infrastructure in place, with a committed coaching staff and state-of-the-art facilities including the new Matthaei Center, which houses the team's practice court as well as a weight room, training facilities, and more. If the Warriors can continue to attract and develop top talent, they should remain a consistent threat in the GLIAC for years to come.
