The Western Michigan Broncos men's basketball team first began playing in 1913, and they have been a staple of Mid-American Conference (MAC) play since the conference was formed in 1946. The Broncos have won seven MAC regular-season titles and five conference tournaments, with their most recent tournament championship coming in 2014.
One of the reasons Western Michigan has been successful is due to their coaching continuity. Former head coach Steve Hawkins was at the helm for 17 years, leading the Broncos to four MAC tournament titles. When Hawkins retired in 2020, assistant coach Clayton Bates took over the program, becoming just the fourth head coach in the program's last 50 years.
While Western Michigan has had its share of success in the MAC, the Broncos have also made a few appearances in the NCAA Tournament, most recently in 2014 when they earned an automatic bid by winning the conference tournament.
