Xerxes, also known as Serse or Khshayarshan, was a Persian king who ruled from 485-465 BCE. While he may be well-known in history, Xerxes is also a significant character in the world of classical opera.

One of the most famous representations of Xerxes in classical opera is through the works of George Frideric Handel. In fact, his operatic version of Xerxes, which premiered in 1738, remains one of the composer’s most revered works to this day. This opera, called simply Xerxes, is based on the plot of a libretto by Silvio Stampiglia and it tells the story of King Xerxes and his quest for love and power.

The opera features a number of beautiful arias, including the famous “Ombra mai fu,” better known as the “Largo” from Xerxes. The aria is sung by Xerxes himself, and expresses his love for a tree in his garden. The piece is now considered an iconic part of the canon of classical music and has been recorded numerous times by various great singers.

Another famous depiction of Xerxes in classical opera comes from Johann Adolf Hasse, a composer from the same era as Handel. Hasse’s opera Artaserse (1740) is based on the ancient Greek tragedy about the murder of Darius I of Persia by one of his sons, which was attributed by Herodotus to Artaxerxes, Xerxes's predecessor, but in Hasse's opera, Xerxes is the guilty party. This opera showcases Xerxes’ political ambitions and his desire to rule over the kingdom left by his father. It was a resounding success and helped establish Hasse as a leading composer of his time.

In more recent times, Xerxes has continued to fascinate audiences with his portrayal in modern classical operas. In 1983, one such instance occurred when Nicholas Maw’s opera Xerxes premiered at the English National Opera. This modern adaptation of the story puts greater emphasis on Xerxes’ psychological state and his interactions with the other characters, resulting in a more complex characterization of its protagonist.

Overall, Xerxes has been a popular figure in classical opera for centuries, thanks to his compelling story of power, ambition, and love. Composers and audiences alike have been captivated by the complexities in the personality Hard to figure out what you mean here; this reads that they are captivated by the complexities in the personality of 'the', maybe replace 'the' with 'Xerxes'? of Xerxes as well as his struggles with finding genuine human connection. Through the years, these adaptations of Xerxes’ story have only added to the ongoing legacy of this storied figure, showing how he remains relevant even after thousands of years.
