Yakov Smirnoff is a Ukrainian-born American comedian, actor, and writer who rose to fame in the 1980s for his comedic work, particularly his signature phrase “What a country!” He is known for his unique brand of humor, which incorporates observational comedy and wordplay with his experiences as a Soviet immigrant in the United States.

Born in Odessa, Ukraine in 1951, Smirnoff was initially trained as an artist and painter. However, he developed an interest in comedy early on and started performing stand-up in Russia before moving to the U.S. in the late 1970s.
