AC Ajaccio, commonly known as Ajaccio, is a French professional football club that plays in Ligue 2, the second tier of French football. The club was founded in 1909 under the name FC Ajaccio, but it was not until 1965 that it became AC Ajaccio.

Ajaccio's home ground is the Stade François Coty, which has a capacity of just over 10,000 spectators. The team's primary colors are red and white, which we can see on their crest consisting of a Moor's head on a background divided vertically into red and white. Like many Corsican clubs, Ajaccio enjoys considerable support from their island, with the team regularly drawing large crowds at home.

In recent years, Ajaccio has established itself as one of the strongest teams in Ligue 2. In the 2018-19 season, they finished fourth in the table, narrowly missing out on promotion to Ligue 1 via the play-offs. Ajaccio's historical rivalry with SC Bastia, arguably the most notorious derby in French football, adds to the atmosphere surrounding home games.

The history of Ajaccio is not without its challenges. Despite some decent campaigns in the top flight like playing 7 consecutive seasons between 2002-03 and 2008-09, the club's struggle to maintain financial stability saw them relegated several times during periods of their existence. However, the team's resilience shone through in the 2010-11 season when they bounced back to Ligue 1 after spending seven years in Ligue 2. That campaign had been somewhat overshadowed by an infamous stoppage time winner against US Boulogne-Côte d’Opale, when Ajaccio’s goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa scored a sensational free-kick to secure the promotion and keep their hopes alive.

Despite the team seemingly being at its peak, Ajaccio was hit by a major crisis in the summer of 2013 when they were demoted to National (the third tier) due to administrative issues. The team bounced back quickly and won promotion back to Ligue 2 in the following season, showing once more their commitment and determination.

Despite this rich history, Ajaccio is perhaps best remembered for an infamous incident in May 2018. At that time, the club faced Ligue 1 side Toulouse FC in a first-round French Cup match, which ended 1-0 to Ajaccio. However, the match was overshadowed by a violent attack on the Toulouse team bus that caused significant damage, halting the start of the second half by over an hour. The event received widespread condemnation from across French football and beyond, leading to heavy sanctions against the club.

Overall, AC Ajaccio is a club with a rich history and has proven itself to be a force to reckon with in Ligue 2. While they have not yet matched their Ligue 1 peaks of the early 2000s, the team's resilience, dedication, and passionate support continue to make them one of the most exciting and well-supported clubs in French football.
