The Houston Comets were one of the founding teams of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and are often regarded as one of the most successful franchises in WNBA history. The Comets were active in the league from 1997 to 2008 when they were disbanded due to financial difficulties.

Throughout their time in the league, the Houston Comets won a total of four consecutive WNBA championships from 1997 to 2000. They also qualified for the playoffs seven times in their twelve-year tenure in the league. The franchise was known for its dynamic trio of stars, including Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, and Tina Thompson, who led the team to glory in their early years.

Cynthia Cooper, who was an established professional basketball player in Europe before joining the WNBA, played for the Comets from 1997-2000. She is considered by many to be one of the greatest players in WNBA history, leading the league in scoring during each of the four championship seasons with the Comets. Cooper was the WNBA Finals MVP in all four championship victories and was named the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP) two times.

Sheryl Swoopes joined the Comets in 1997 in the first round of the WNBA’s inaugural draft and played for the team until 2007. The three-time MVP winner is widely regarded as one of the greatest female basketball players of all time. Swoopes was an integral part of the Comets' championship-winning streak, especially during the 1999 Finals, where she scored a record-breaking 47 points in Game 3.

Tina Thompson, the third member of the “Big Three,” was drafted first overall by the Comets in the 1997 draft and played for the team until 2008. Thompson is a nine-time All-Star and ranks second in the WNBA in career scoring with over 7,000 points. She was also an important part of the Comets' success during their championship-winning streak.

Besides having a talented core of players, the Comets also had a successful coach in Van Chancellor. Chancellor led the team to stunning victories during their championship years and has the highest winning percentage (.658) in WNBA history among coaches who have coached at least 100 games.

Houston Comets' success in the WNBA paved the way for other women’s professional sports teams in America. The success of the franchise helped raise awareness of women's basketball and encouraged other cities to establish women's basketball franchises.

Although the Houston Comets are no longer an active team in the WNBA, their legacy lives on through their great players and championship banners. The Comets set a standard of excellence that is still admired by fans of the WNBA today.
