The 2017-18 season for the New Mexico State (NMSU) women’s basketball team was one filled with both successes and setbacks. The team, led by head coach Brooke Atkinson, finished the season with an overall record of 17-14 and a conference record of 10-4.

One of the highlights of the season for NMSU was their performance in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) tournament. The Aggies, who were the third seed in the tournament, won two games to advance to the championship game against top-seeded Seattle University. Despite falling to Seattle 57-54 in a hard-fought game, NMSU showed that they were a force to be reckoned with in the WAC.

Individually, the Aggies were led by a trio of talented players: Brooke Salas, Tamera William, and Zaire Williams. Salas, a junior forward, was named First Team All-WAC for the second consecutive year after averaging 19.1 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. William, a senior guard, was named Second Team All-WAC after averaging 13.9 points and 2.7 assists per game. Williams, a sophomore guard, was named WAC Freshman of the Year after averaging 8.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

One of the challenges for NMSU during the season was their inconsistent play. While the Aggies had some impressive wins, including victories over Cal State Fullerton and Texas-Rio Grande Valley, they also had some disappointing losses, such as a 61-52 defeat against Chicago State. Additionally, NMSU struggled on the road, finishing the season with a 5-10 record away from home.

Looking ahead, the 2018-19 season will present new challenges for the Aggies. In addition to losing standout seniors like William, they will also be facing a new conference opponent in California Baptist, a team that dominated Division II play before transitioning to Division I. However, with Salas and Williams returning and a number of talented newcomers joining the team, NMSU has the potential to continue building on their recent success and compete for a WAC championship once again.
