One of the most notable teams in San Diego’s basketball history is the San Diego Gold, which was founded in 2003 and played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) until 2008. The team was owned by a group of local businessmen who were passionate about bringing professional basketball to San Diego.
The Gold represented San Diego with pride, wearing their signature black and gold uniforms while playing home games at the RIMAC Arena on the UC San Diego campus. The team quickly gained a large fan base and became a staple of the San Diego sports scene.
The San Diego Gold boasted an impressive roster of players, including former NBA players such as Mikki Moore and Charles Smith, as well as local talent like San Diego State University standout Al Faux. Under the leadership of head coach Keith Sims, the Gold played an exciting brand of basketball that fans loved to watch.
In the 2006-2007 season, the Gold made it to the ABA championship game but fell just short of the title. Despite the disappointment, the team had established itself as one of the premier franchises in the league.
Sadly, the San Diego Gold came to an end in 2008 when the ABA disbanded. However, the legacy of the team lives on, and the impact they had on the San Diego basketball community is still felt today.
The San Diego Gold helped pave the way for future basketball teams in the area, including the San Diego Waves and the San Diego Guardians. In addition, the team helped put San Diego on the map as a legitimate destination for professional basketball.
Looking back at the San Diego Gold’s brief but impactful history, it’s clear that they were much more than just a basketball team. They were a symbol of San Diego’s spirit and passion, bringing together people from all walks of life to cheer on their hometown heroes.
