The Troy University Trojans is a Division I basketball program in the NCAA that competes in the Sun Belt Conference. The Trojans have had a storied history of basketball success since the team’s inception back in 1929. Today, the Trojans continue to excel and have become one of the more exciting mid-major programs in college basketball.
The Trojans have seen tremendous success in both their men's and women's basketball programs. The men's team has appeared in two NCAA Tournaments in their history, first in 2003 and again in 2017. In 2003, the Trojans made an improbable run and won their conference tournament, punching their ticket to the Big Dance as a 14-seed. Despite losing in the first round to Xavier, the Trojans put up a hard-fought battle against the higher seed.
In 2017, the men's team claimed the Sun Belt Conference Championship once again and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. This time around, the Trojans would face off against the Duke Blue Devils in the First Round. Although the game was never particularly close, with Duke winning 87-65, the Trojans once again represented themselves to the best of their abilities on the national stage.
The Women's program has also seen much success and is consistently among the top programs in the Sun Belt Conference. The team won four consecutive conference championships from 2009-2012 and earned a bid to the WNIT three times in that span. The Trojans’ women's basketball team reached new heights during the 2020/21 season where they secured a spot in their first-ever NCAA Tournament after winning the Sun Belt Conference's postseason tournament.
Throughout its history, the Troy University basketball program has produced numerous talented individuals who have gone on to play professionally. Players like Jordan Varnado, Wesley Person Jr., and Brandon Hazzard have all donned the Trojan jersey over the years. Additionally, many former Trojan basketball players are now coaches at the high school or college level, including Ryan Cross who’s an assistant coach for the University of Texas Men's Basketball team.
The Trojans are a program with a proud history and promising future.
