The University of North Dakota men's basketball team has a history of excellence on the court. From their early days as a small college team to today, UND basketball has consistently performed at a high level.

For many years, North Dakota competed in a variety of conferences at different levels of competition. It wasn't until 2012 when they finally landed in the Big Sky Conference, one of the premier mid-major conferences in Division I basketball.

Since joining the Big Sky, UND has experienced a few highs and lows on the court. In their first season, they finished with a respectable 12-8 conference record but missed out on a postseason berth. The following year, however, they won the Big Sky regular season title and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history.

Despite the success in 2016, the team struggled to maintain consistency over the next few seasons. They finished near the bottom of the conference and failed to make it back to the NCAA tournament.

However, with new head coach Paul Sather leading the way, there is renewed hope for UND basketball. Sather, a former assistant at Northern State, has a proven track record of success in the Division II ranks and will look to bring that same winning culture to Grand Forks.

Sather inherits a team with some talented players, including guard Marlon Stewart and forward Kienan Walter. Stewart, a senior, has been a key contributor since his arrival on campus and is expected to have a big year as the team's floor general. Walter, a transfer from Fresno State, brings size and athleticism to the frontcourt and will look to make an immediate impact.

With a solid group of returning players and some exciting newcomers, UND could be poised for a breakout season in 2020-21. If they can continue to improve and play up to their potential, they should compete for a top-four finish in the Big Sky and potentially make a run at the conference tournament title.
