It is no secret that college basketball in the United States is one of the most popular and watched sports. With hundreds of universities competing against each other, it is an industry that generates millions of dollars annually. However, not every team in college basketball is a household name. The Westmont Warriors basketball team is a prime example of a lesser-known college basketball team that deserves attention.

Westmont College is a small, private, Christian liberal arts college located in Santa Barbara, California. Although not widely known for its athletics program, the Warriors have been making their mark in college basketball. The team competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and has achieved impressive accomplishments over the years.

The Warriors' basketball program began in 1969, and it didn't take long for them to make noise. In their first season, they won the California Collegiate Athletic Association conference title and made it to the Division III national tournament. Since then, the Warriors have continued to display outstanding talent and sportsmanship on the court.

In recent years, the program has become even more successful. In the 2019-2020 season, the Warriors finished with a 30-4 record and were ranked as high as #2 in the NAIA national rankings. They also won the Golden State Athletic Conference Championship and qualified for the NAIA national tournament, where they advanced to the quarterfinals before the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19.

One of the reasons for the Warriors' success is the leadership of head coach John Moore. He has been at the helm of the program since 1985 and has accumulated a career record of 734-325. Moore has earned numerous accolades, including being named the NAIA Coach of the Year in 2013 and being inducted into the Santa Barbara Basketball Court of Champions in 2019.

Despite being a smaller school, Westmont has produced some talented basketball players over the years. One notable alumnus is Dan Riegert, who was a three-time NAIA All-American and still holds the record for the most points scored in a single game (53). Other notable alumni include Tim Tawa, one of the top baseball prospects in the country, and Tyler McGrath, a professional basketball player overseas.

The Warriors may not have the same recognition as some of the bigger college basketball programs, but they certainly have the talent and drive to compete at a high level. As they continue to excel on and off the court, more people will take notice of this impressive collegiate team.
