The Quakers play in the Ohio Athletic Conference, a Division III conference that includes teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. While they may not be playing at the same level as Ohio State or Michigan, the Quakers have had some success over the years, including seven conference championships and four appearances in the NCAA playoffs.
One of the most notable players to come out of Wilmington is L.C. Greenwood, who played defensive end for the Pittsburgh Steelers during their dynasty in the 1970s. Greenwood was actually a late addition to the Wilmington roster, having transferred from Arkansas-Pine Bluff after one year. He quickly made an impact on the field and was drafted by the Steelers in the 10th round of the 1969 NFL Draft.
While Wilmington may not have the resources or visibility of a major Power Five program, the Quakers still attract talented athletes who are passionate about football and want to play at the collegiate level. Many of these players may go on to pursue careers outside of football, but the experiences and lessons learned on the field will stay with them for a lifetime.
